New Staff Spotlight: Lyda Widmayer, Regional Office of Education Student Mentor/JV Softball Coach/Freshmen Girls Basketball Coach 🥎
“I was born and raised in Odell. We moved to Morris for a year when I was in 7th Grade and I attended Saratoga. After that, I moved to Seneca in 8th grade and I am a Class of 2018 graduate of Seneca High School.”
“After graduation, I went to Saint Xavier University and played softball there for 5 years. I earned my Bachelor’s in Sports and Fitness Administration with minors in PE, Psychology, and Exercise Science. I received my Master’s in Clinical Health Counseling from North Park University in 2025 and spent last school year at Peotone High School as an Administrative Assistant for their Athletic Director. I was also the Assistant Softball Coach there.”
“My husband Jeremy and I got married last May. We did the big three of marriage, house, and dog, adopting our 2-year-old dog Stevie as a rescue last April. I really enjoy going to concerts and have gone to many this year, including Olivia Dean, Harry Styles, and Ella Langley. My husband and I are also really into fitness.”
“I have always loved this school but never thought there would be an opportunity to work here for a very long time. When I got my Master’s, I felt that going into private practice counseling might be the route, but didn’t think that would be my passion for a long-term career. I then found Peotone and decided that the high school or administration route might be more my speed. I liked the environment of being around students and being in a high school setting, so when this opportunity came up I knew it would be the perfect fit. Many teachers that I had are still here, which speaks to the community and stability that Seneca has. This school poured so much into me and I am excited now to pour back.”
“Everyone has been really welcoming. There was a bit of an adjustment to not being a student anymore and being a co-worker with my former teachers. However, I think that I had enough time away from Seneca while in college and graduate school where I wasn’t as connected with the community anymore. Coming back has felt somewhat like a fresh start but being so comfortable with the school has made this a very easy transition for me.”
“I want students to feel like they have a place to go and feel connected to. I had staff members here that I felt really connected to and safe with when things were coming up in my life. Just having that support was really important to get me through high school so I hope to create that same environment. There are so many decisions at this age and it is very easy to feel like the world is on your shoulders, so I just hope to be that support system to go to if students need anything. I know that I’ll be seeing more students as a coach, so I just want to be a safe person they can go to with their problems and feel comfortable with.”
“For the students I work with through the mentor program, I just want to see improvements with academics and attendance. I want them to look forward to coming to school and help them enjoy their high school experience. I have never coached basketball before so I really just hope to learn and grow with the freshmen and sophomores while having fun. Softball is coming off a really great year as the State Runner-Up so naturally there is going to be pressure and expectations there. Coach Read was a pivotal coach and person for the girls as a strong female presence. I feel I have big shoes to fill for that but hope to continue giving them that support. I think just being a new set of eyes and ears will be beneficial for them and we’ll hopefully have another great run.”
