Our "Real World" Stress Test

Reasons:

  • Run a real world test of the network

  • Fix issues found

  • Prepare for the upcoming 1:1 initiative

Information:

Having every laptop available streaming an in house video off of blackboard.  By doing this we are stressing out the bandwidth on our network to its fullest.  Video is a bandwidth hog, streaming video 280 times is an excellent challenge for our Wi-Fi, network and servers.

Teachers will present this information to their homeroom the day before the stress test so they are prepared to do it.  There will be no switching classes during this homeroom period.  Every teacher not involved with one of the laptop carts is asked to follow the directions on their teacher laptop.

Our Stress Test

We found that our wireless system is more than adequate for our future 1:1 program.  The video ran on 99 percent of the laptops, and the ones it didn’t was the fault of the laptop.  During this test the blackboard server didn’t not even utilize 50 percent of its memory.

We wanted to have Ruckus Wireless come in and “tweak” our wireless system and this is the email from the ruckus representative:

With the info you provided and the amount of AP's, users, clients, existing infrastructure and future bandwidth, we think your existing configuration is more than adequate. You have will have ample coverage in that building.  We can do a paper study for you and provide some detailed reporting with some possible adjustments or contingencies for future needs, but to do a full site survey with signal study would be unnecessary and wasteful of your resources.

Dual band vs Single Band

This is the top speed on a file transfer, the dual band is more than double the speed.
