Mr. Maxwell's Excellent Adventure

Science teacher, Mr. Terry Maxwell, is sailing aboard R/V Hugh R. Sharp to assist scientists on a 16-day survey of Atlantic sea scallop populations off the Northeastern U.S. coast. Maxwell will participate in this cruise as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher at Sea program, which bridges science and education through real-world research experiences.

Mr. Maxwell boarded the boat June 6 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and has been working with scientists daily as they conduct an ongoing population survey of sea scallop populations in the Northeast.

"NOAA's Teacher at Sea Program gives teachers the professional opportunity of a lifetime with a chance to participate in cutting edge science, on the ocean, working side-by-side with world-renowned scientists,” said Jennifer Hammond, the program’s director. “Teachers describe this authentic research experience as transformative and one that allows them to bring new knowledge and excitement back to their classrooms.”

Now in its 27th year, the program has provided nearly 750 teachers the opportunity to gain firsthand experience participating in science at sea. This year, NOAA received applications from nearly 250 teachers and chose 30 to participate in research cruises.
